Trained GPs who insert IUDs can be hard to find. Dr Saweela Sarwar offers them on-site at Iluka Medical Centre, with unhurried, confidential care guided by current Australian guidelines.
Only around 11% of Australian women aged 15 to 44 use a long-acting reversible contraceptive, well below comparable countries.3,4 A big reason is access: not enough GPs are trained to insert them, and services cluster in the cities. Having Dr Sarwar do this on-site means the whole conversation, and the procedure, happens with a GP in your own community.
In your consultation, Dr Sarwar talks through both types and helps you decide which suits your body and your life.
Knowing how it goes helps you feel prepared and in control. The insertion itself usually takes only 5 to 10 minutes.
Dr Sarwar discusses your health history, your preferences and whether an IUD suits you. Pain-relief options are talked through upfront.
You're positioned comfortably and local anaesthetic is offered. There's no rush, and you set the pace.
A speculum is used, much like a cervical screen. Mild cramping is normal and expected, and it's over in minutes.
You rest for a short while at the clinic. Any cramping usually settles within a few days.
We check in, answer any questions, and you're always welcome back if something doesn't feel right.
From 1 November 2025, Medicare rebates for IUD and implant procedures roughly doubled and bulk-billing incentives were expanded, as part of the Australian Government's Strengthening Medicare Women's Health Package.1,2 The Government estimates these changes save many women up to $400 a year in out-of-pocket costs for long-acting contraception.1
What you actually pay depends on your circumstances and the items billed, so the simplest thing is to ask us. We'll go through your expected out-of-pocket cost and any rebates before you book the procedure.
